Salmedix Completes $45 Million Series C Financing

PR Newswire - March 30, 2004

SAN DIEGO, March 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Salmedix, Inc. announced today that it has completed the sale of $45 million of its Series C Preferred Stock.

New investor HIG Ventures led the round. Other new investors, OrbiMed Advisors, Easton Hunt Capital Partners, Hunt Ventures, Novo A/S, Quilvest Capital and Clariden Bank, joined in the financing, along with the existing Series A and B investors, InterWest Partners, Versant Ventures, Alexandria Equities, CMEA Ventures, Delphi Ventures, ProQuest Investments, Ventures West, Aberdare Partners, GeneChem Therapeutics and BioFrontier Global Investment Partnership.

Aaron Davidson, Managing Director of HIG Ventures, and Sam Wertheimer, Ph. D., Principal of OrbiMed Advisors, have joined the Board of Directors.

"We expect this investment to provide Salmedix with adequate capital to advance our three clinical-stage products, including our lead investigational drug, SDX-105, which is currently being evaluated in a Phase II/III clinical program with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma patients," said David S. Kabakoff, Ph. D., Chairman & CEO.

"HIG Ventures has selected Salmedix as the first life science investment we have led," said Aaron Davidson. "We were attracted by the company's track record of identifying promising clinical oncology products, coupled with a strong execution-focused management team."

About Salmedix

Salmedix, Inc. is developing promising oncology drugs, with an initial commercial focus on hematologic cancers. In addition to SDX-105, Salmedix has two drugs in Phase II clinical development, as well as several preclinical product candidates. A multi-center, multi-national Phase Ib/II study in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia was recently completed with SDX-101, a "first-in-class" compound. SDX-102, a targeted therapy for molecularly defined tumors, is in a Phase II trial to investigate its potential as a treatment for non-small cell lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, sarcoma, and mesothelioma. Salmedix's experienced team of "drug hunters" continues to identify, and will develop, additional clinical-stage cancer therapeutics.
